Not all clips sold as baby clips are actually safe for babies. Here's how South African moms can quickly identify which clips are safe and which have red flags — before they put anything near their baby.

Not all clips sold as baby clips are actually appropriate for babies. The label "for babies" on packaging does not guarantee safety. Here's how to check any clip before it goes near your baby — a quick, practical safety assessment that takes thirty seconds.

Run Your Fingers Over Every Surface

Close the clip. Run a finger over every part of the exterior — the sides, the top, the hinge, the mechanism. Nothing should feel sharp, pointed, or rough. Open the clip. Run a finger along the interior teeth or lining. Nothing should catch on skin. If anything feels like it could scratch or snag, it will scratch or snag on baby hair and baby skin.

Try to Detach the Decoration

Hold the clip base in one hand and firmly try to pull the bow, flower, or decorative element off with the other. Apply real force — more than a baby or toddler would apply, but not so much that you're trying to break it. If the decoration comes away from the base with reasonable force, it's a choking hazard and should not be used on or near a baby. The decoration must be firmly, permanently attached.

Size Check

The base mechanism of any clip should be too large to fit entirely in a baby or toddler's mouth. Very small alligator clips — smaller than a 20-cent coin — can become choking hazards if they were to detach from the decoration. Choose clips with appropriately sized bases for the age of your child.

SA Mom Safety Check — 30 Seconds

Before using any clip on your baby: (1) Check for sharp edges — run fingers over all surfaces. (2) Try to detach the decoration — if it comes off, don't use it. (3) Check the size — is the base too small to be safe? (4) Check the mechanism — does it close smoothly and fully? These four checks take thirty seconds and give you real confidence that a clip is safe.

Signs of a Well-Made Baby Clip

A good baby clip has smooth, rounded exterior surfaces with no sharp points. The interior is lined with soft fabric that won't scratch. The decoration is firmly attached — stitched, glued and reinforced, or constructed as one piece. The mechanism closes cleanly and completely. The overall construction feels solid rather than flimsy. These characteristics together describe a clip that's genuinely appropriate for a baby.
