A worn-out clip doesn't hold. A stretched elastic damages hair. Knowing when to replace hair accessories keeps your toddler's hair healthy and your morning routine working properly. Here are the signs it's time.
Hair accessories don't last forever — and using worn-out accessories causes real problems: clips that don't hold, elastics that damage hair, headbands that have lost their shape. Here's how to know when it's time to replace something in your toddler's accessories collection.
Clips — When the Spring Goes
The most reliable sign that a clip needs to be replaced is when it no longer closes with the same tension it had when new. A clip with weakening spring tension will open slightly under the weight of the hair and slide out. Test any clip you haven't used in a while: close it and see how strongly it resists being opened by gentle pressure. If it opens very easily, the spring has weakened and the clip will not hold hair reliably. Replace it.
Also replace any clip with damaged or missing lining — the lining is what provides grip on fine hair, and a damaged lining means the clip will perform like a cheap bare-metal clip regardless of its original quality.
Elastics — Replace Regularly
Fabric-covered elastics should be replaced when the fabric is fraying (sharp fabric edges can snag on hair), when the elastic has lost its stretch significantly (it will need to be wound more times and create more pressure), or after any elastic snaps when in use (damaged elastic is more likely to snap again, potentially catching hair as it does). A full pack of new elastics costs very little and makes a genuine difference to hair health and holding reliability.
Headbands — When the Fit Changes
Replace headbands when the fabric is pilling or rough (it will create friction against hair), when the band has stretched out and no longer sits correctly on the head, or when any element of the headband — bow, flower, or other decoration — is coming away from the base. A decoration that's partially detached is a safety concern and the headband should be retired.
The beginning of each school term is a natural time to audit the accessories collection. Check every clip's spring tension, discard any damaged elastics, and inspect headbands for wear. Replacing worn items at the start of a term means you're not discovering problems on a busy school morning mid-term.
Caring for Accessories to Extend Their Life
Quality accessories last significantly longer with basic care. Hand wash fabric accessories in mild soap and cold water. Allow to air dry completely before storing. Keep clips and elastics in a single container rather than loose in a drawer where they tangle. Store away from direct sunlight, which fades fabric over time. With basic care, a quality clip can last a full school year and beyond.
