You're expecting a girl, or she's just arrived, and you want to start building her accessories collection. Here's exactly what to buy first — in the right order, for the right reasons.
First: A Soft Headband
Before there's enough hair for any clip, a soft headband is the only accessory that works reliably. One or two soft, cloud-nylon headbands in neutral tones are the first purchase every new SA mom of a girl should make. They'll be used immediately — from the first week home — and they work regardless of how much or how little hair your baby has at birth.
Second: A Small, Quality Clip
When the hair is long enough to hold a clip — usually around five to eight months — your first clip should be a quality lined alligator clip in a neutral tone. Not a pack of cheap clips. One good clip. This is your proof of concept — if it holds, you build from here. If it doesn't, you know to look for different characteristics before buying more.
Third: Build a Small Everyday Set
Once you know a style of clip works on your baby's hair, buy three to six of the same or similar — enough for the week without running out. Two neutrals and one slightly more decorative clip for special occasions is a good starting set. This is your functional everyday collection and the foundation everything else builds on.
Fourth: The Special Occasion Clip
Once the everyday collection is in place, add one more beautiful clip or bow that's a step above the everyday ones. Reserved for birthdays, family photos, Heritage Day, and other occasions that call for something a little more special. Having this in the collection means you're always prepared when a special occasion arrives unexpectedly.
