The first year goes faster than anyone warns you. Parents who document it month by month are consistently grateful they did. Here's a guide to photographing every milestone of your baby girl's first year.
The first year goes faster than anyone warns you. Parents who document it month by month are consistently grateful — those who don't consistently wish they had. Here's a practical guide to photographing every milestone of your baby girl's first year in South Africa.
Setting Up a Monthly Photo System
Choose one location, one prop, and one setup that you'll repeat every month. The consistency is everything — seeing the same backdrop with a dramatically changing baby in it creates the series that becomes one of the most treasured things you own. Choose something that will still be available in month twelve. Photograph on or near the same day each month. The exact date matters less than the consistency.
Month One — The Newborn
Photograph the curled sleeping poses. The tiny hands and feet. The way she fits on your chest. The scale details that will be unbelievable in a year — her whole body in someone's hands, her feet next to your fingers. This stage changes faster than any other. These details disappear and don't come back.
Month Two — The First Smiles
The social smile appears around six to eight weeks. Set up your camera on a timer, get down to her level, and talk to her. The real smiles — unselfconscious, full-body, irresistible — are better than any posed photo. These are the ones that will make you cry when you look at them later.
Month Three to Five — Discovery
She's grabbing things, studying faces, responding to voices with her whole body. Documentary-style photos taken during play, feeding, or tummy time capture the wonder of a baby learning about the world. These months often produce the most joyful images of the entire first year.
Month Six — The Sitting Milestone
When she sits unsupported for the first time, photograph it. The wobbly, triumphant, impossibly proud sitting of a six-month-old is a specific and beautiful thing that will be steady and confident within weeks. Get the wobbly version. You won't regret it.
Month Seven to Nine — On the Move
Crawling, pulling up, cruising the furniture. These months are active and entertaining and produce some of the most dynamic images of the first year. Documentary rather than posed — follow the movement and capture the determination on her face as she figures out how to get everywhere she wants to go.
Month Twelve — The First Birthday
The full year deserves a proper celebration photo. A beautiful birthday outfit, a cake, her family around her. And a beautiful hair accessory for the occasion — something that says this is a special day, because it is.
"Document every milestone. The first year is the one that changes the most rapidly. The photos you take now are the ones you'll look at most when she's grown."
